About BHSA

Advocating for black humanist studies

The Black Humanist Studies Association (BHSA), founded in 2024 by Drs. Anthony Pinn and Christopher Cameron, is a scholarly organization dedicated to advancing the study and teaching of Black Humanist Studies. Rooted in an interdisciplinary approach, BHSA explores the intellectual, cultural, and social dimensions of Black humanism—an intellectual tradition emphasizing reason, critical inquiry, ethics, and human flourishing outside of religious frameworks. BHSA seeks to foster research that highlights the historical and contemporary contributions of Black humanist thinkers, activists, and artists while addressing the intersections of race, identity, and secular thought. The association is committed to creating a supportive and inclusive community for scholars, educators, and students working in or aspiring to contribute to this emerging field.

Through conferences, workshops, and publications, BHSA promotes dialogue and collaboration among researchers and educators across disciplines, including history, philosophy, sociology, religious studies, and literature. The organization also prioritizes the integration of Black Humanist Studies into academic curricula, ensuring that this vital perspective becomes a core component of the broader intellectual landscape. In addition to its academic focus, BHSA supports public scholarship and outreach initiatives, bridging the gap between academic research and the lived experiences of Black communities. By amplifying diverse voices and fostering critical conversations, BHSA aims to illuminate the transformative potential of Black humanist thought for addressing the pressing social and cultural challenges of the 21st century.
